Do detox diets and cleanses actually work?
Juice cleanses, “detox” teas and 3-day flushes are everywhere. The promise is that they clear out toxins and reset your body. The reality is simpler — and more reassuring: your body already detoxes itself, around the clock.
Your body has a detox system
Your liver, kidneys, gut and skin continuously neutralize and remove waste. No tea, juice or supplement does this job better. There’s no evidence that cleanses remove “toxins” — and the products rarely even name which toxin they remove.
Why cleanses can backfire
- very low-calorie juice days spike blood sugar and leave you hungry and tired;
- rapid “weight loss” is mostly water and muscle, and returns fast;
- “detox” laxative teas can upset fluids and electrolytes.
The “lightness” people feel is usually just eating less processed food for a few days — which you can keep without the juice.
What genuinely supports your body
Give your natural detox organs what they need, every day:
- plenty of fiber and vegetables;
- enough water;
- good sleep;
- less alcohol and ultra-processed food;
- regular movement.
That’s the real “cleanse” — and it works because it’s sustainable.
Frequently asked questions
Do detox teas remove toxins?
No. There’s no evidence detox teas remove toxins; many simply act as laxatives or diuretics. Your liver and kidneys already handle detoxification.
Does your body need help detoxing?
For healthy people, no. The liver, kidneys, gut and skin do this continuously. You support them with fiber, water, sleep and less alcohol — not cleanses.
Why do I feel lighter on a cleanse?
Usually because you cut alcohol and processed food for a few days and lost water weight — not because toxins left. You can keep that benefit with everyday habits.
